Accounting Manager at Washington Corporations
As a leader of the Washington Corporations shared service accounting team, the Accounting Manager works with individuals within Washington Corporations as well as other financial and operational staff in the entities that is supports. The information that is collected, analyzed and reported by this role is critical to the owners, department heads and executives who oversee the operations and finances of these organizations.
The Accounting Manager oversees and manages one or more specialized finance or accounting functions and/or the accounting oversight over specific legal entities that are serviced by the Washington Corporations shared service finance and accounting team.
This hands-on, people leader, plays a key role in supporting the finance department to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting and analysis to support day-to-day decision making, and to ensure that proper internal controls are in place to safeguard the Company’s assets and promote efficient and effective operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
•Directly supervise staff and accounting activities which may include accounts receivable and accounts payable processing, ensuring the accurate and timely processing of invoices, purchase orders, petty cash, employee expense reports, cash control, payroll processing and total corporate payroll tax compliance.
•Assist with the accurate and timely dissemination of financial reports.
•Provide accounting and financial reporting oversight over certain legal operating and non-operating entities. This action may include interfacing with other key departmental personnel as it relates to tax or treasury matters.
•Evaluate and make improvements to accounting processes while ensuring that practices comply with organization accounting policies and applicable laws and regulations.
•Provide project updates and understand project accounting, including committed costs and procurement standards.
•Review contracts and identify financial and operational risks. Work closely with the legal team to ensure that we fully understand our contractual commitments and the associated risks.
•Complete financial analysis including providing clear, concise support for variances.
•Identify best practices around general and project accounting as well as develop and document standard operating procedures.
•Ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial information. Help develop and implement systems for collecting, analyzing, verifying and reporting information.
•Perform daily and month end accounting functions for assigned companies.
•Ensure the month-end and year-end closes are completed timely and accurately.
•Create and maintain various management and financial reporting requirements.
•Communicate with departments and project managers on project status, budget variance and forecasts.
•Collaborate with key stakeholders for appropriate cost estimating and forecasting.
•Develop service standards and procedures to gain efficiencies and ensure accuracy of data.
•Simplify complex data through visualization to assist in key stakeholder understanding of data.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
•Solid knowledge of GAAP and understanding of financial statements
•Ability to navigate complex organizations, quickly gain business insights and influence transparency.
•Strong interpersonal and communication skills
•Problem solving expertise with a proven track record of identifying operational opportunities and executing action plans to close gaps in aligning finance maturity capabilities to business demand
•Intermediate to advanced experience with Microsoft Office suite
•JD Edwards experience is a plus
•Possess strong collaboration and communication skills
Education and Certification:
•Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, or equivalent, from an accredited university
•Certified Public Accountant, required.
•5+ years of work experience in Accounting with demonstrated growth in responsibilities.
•2+ years’ public or private accounting experience preferred, but not required.
