The Tax Manager provides support and advice on direct and indirect taxation matters for the Washington Companies, including tax planning, filling, and reporting. This position also helps assess business decisions from a tax perspective, with the objective of minimizing the overall taxation burden while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Manage compliance efforts which includes filing estimates, extensions, and payments to ensure filings and payments are accurately prepared and filed timely.
• Review and/or prepare federal income tax returns, including trust, partnership, S-corporation, not-for-profit and individual returns as well as multi-state tax returns, and all related items filed annually in addition to returns such as tax estimates, extensions and various state filing fees.
• Review and/or prepare international income tax returns, GST/HST indirect tax return, and non-resident withholding tax returns.
• Research various tax issues as they arise throughout the year, including strategic business structuring and transaction planning.
• Manage and direct outside tax professionals.
• Monitor and evaluate income tax law changes as they pertain to Washington Companies.
• Interact with accounting, treasury, foundation, and investment group personnel as may be required. Advise operating company accounting teams on general tax guidance and filings.
• Prepare, file, and pay all quarterly state sales and use tax returns, federal excise tax returns, and all employee benefit plan federal tax returns.
• Act as point of escalation to resolve taxation and reporting related issues in a timely manner and ensure all queries are dealt with correctly and efficiently.
• Understand how the business model aligns with organizational strategy and identify key benefits, costs, and risks, presenting them in a format to enable decision making.
• Oversee and manage master entity listing and tax calendar for deadlines of all Washington Companies and all third-party service providers. Articulate the challenges associated with taxes and specific business transactions within their area of responsibility.
• Analyze and reconcile internally prepared financial data for accuracy in preparation for tax return preparation. Explain legislative changes to business decision-makers to ensure they understand the impact of these changes on the business.
• Research various tax issues as they arise throughout the year, including strategic business structuring and transaction planning.
• Review and approve all tax related account balance reconciliations, proactively interact with stakeholders to gather information on tax related issues and provide resolution through appropriate recommendations, which includes overseeing accounting teams at operating entities and developing tax plans with their teams.
• Develop an understanding and detailed knowledge of the tax structure and reporting packages to ensure conformity with GAAP and tax provisions for each region.
• Oversee and assist in preparation of yearly tax provision for consolidated C-corporation entities financial statements and public accounting audit.
• Foster an environment of openness and trust.
• Share work knowledge and information willingly with peers and colleagues.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Strong working knowledge and understanding of direct and indirect taxes, transfer pricing and tax credits with a minimum of three-year tax team experience in a similar role preferably in shared services organization.
• Strong accounting knowledge backed up by relevant accounting or tax qualification.
• Strong understanding of high net worth individual and private wealth tax compliance/planning.
• Ability to interact with leadership, key stakeholders, and employees in a professional manner.
• Proficiency in the use of ERP systems, MS Excel and Word.
• Strong business acumen. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills; ability to turn information into programmatic deliverables.
• Unquestionable personal and professional integrity, strong work ethic, positive attitude and driver of change. Ability to maintain confidential and proprietary information.

Education and Certification:
• Bachelors in Accounting, Finance or Taxation. Master’s degree preferred.

• A minimum of 5 years’ experience in tax accounting and Certified Public Accountant license required.
• Big 4 tax experience preferred with experience in family offices preferred.
